Billy Blanks' Ultimate Tae Bo is one of the better quality and value workouts available. Tae Bo has been going strong since the late 1990s, and with good reason. Billy Blank's excellent system of kick-boxing workouts continues to deliver a fun, high-energy, full body workout which is among the best at burning calories. This Ultimate collection is packed with 112 minutes in 1 disc (about the best value we've seen), so with this much variety you're unlikely to tire of the workouts (though you will get tired, these things are intense!)
If you're new to Tae Bo, you should definitely watch the instructional bits a few times to be sure you're not overextending on kicks or jabs--but it doesn't take long to get the proper form down. And if your range of motion isn't quite as good as it used to be, you can do lower kicks, etc.--Billy often mentions lower impact options as he goes along, and there's almost always a grandmother in the audience following along just fine with the rest just to show it can be done.
If you've never done a kick boxing workout before, then please don't be put off by the idea, as it's a great full body workout and you don't need to be a martial artist to try. The idea has certainly caught on, and there are scads of other kick boxing aerobic workouts on the market, most modeled on the ideas pioneered by Billy Blanks and Tae Bo. Blanks is an authentic fitness instructor rather than a bubbly celebrity, but he does have an infectious and good natured way about him, and is a great motivator.
You do need to have a bit of room for Tae Bo, as you'll be moving from side to side doing kicks and such. One of the best things about Tae Bo is it's fundamentally fun. You may be the biggest pacifist and wallflower, but when you're running around doing kicks and punches, it simply feels good and is fun in a way that normal aerobics rarely is. Again, a kick boxing workout may sound weird or "not like you," but do yourself a favor and give it a try.
Content: The Ultimate Tae Bo workouts consist of different series of sets of eight repetitions each, starting with a 10 minute warm-up to test your ability to perform the entire routine. There is a brief dance section toward the end, and customer comments suggest that isn't eveyone's cup of tea, and some people skip it, but even without that bit, it is an intense workout.
Prices: The Billy Blanks' Ultimate Tae Bo DVD retails for $15.99, but you can get it much cheaper on Amazon for around $7.98.
