Pilates Weight Loss Workout for Dummies is an excellent introduction to Pilates, and remains popular, but it's really not suitable for a long-term workout regime. The makers of the popular Dummies instructional books and videos have done it again, this time with a beginner's guide to the complex system that is Pilates. The program focuses on floor work (a matt is essential if you have a hard floor, but there's no need for a ball, chair, or anything else).
This DVD is very much aimed at beginners--experienced fitness enthusiasts complain that it is very simple, a bit short, and not a challenge. At least the instructor, Tracey Thompson, gives you plenty of time to learn the moves. Some experienced reviewers noted this workout is nearly yoga as much as Pilates, and wanted something more intense.
The exercises are gentle, though they will raise your heart rate, so you may only want to start on this DVD for a few weeks before moving onto something more aerobic to get the pounds coming off quicker. We have nothing against Pilates, especially the more demanding advanced types, but this DVD's subtitle is "Weight Loss Workout" and we're afraid this simply isn't the best routine to shed a significant number pounds.
Everyone's heard of Pilates, but few know the details of this system, which focuses on the powerhouse (the stomach and core muscles of the body) to gain strength and lose weight. A specific breathing method--through the nose only is employed during key movement. This method first popularised by German athlete Joseph Pilates is now second to yoga in worldwide popularity.
Content: This beginners Pilates workout lasts around 35 minutes, comprised of 20 minutes of standing work and 15 minutes of matt work.
Prices: The Pilates Weight Loss Workout for Dummies DVD can be purchased at Amazon for around $10. That may sound cheap (and it is), but keep in mind it's only for a basic 35 minute workout which is probably good for only a few weeks before you get tired / advance beyond it.
