Lipovox is not like most of the diet pills on the market, as it contains a smorgasbord of healthy extracts, and claims to be an anti-acne, anti-wrinkle, and weight loss aid. Lipovox contains extracts of 10 superfoods, roughly following the nutritional guidelines of Dr. Perricone, of Oprah, PBS, and The Perricone Prescription
book fame. To be fair, we can't argue with the ingredients on a health benefit basis--Dr. Perricone is a professor of dermatology at Yale Medical School, and the components are certainly healthy and no doubt good for you, and may well have anti-aging and skin benefits as claimed.
However, we're not convinced of any significant weight loss benefits of the particular Lipovox product. There are certainly no clinical trials of this particular formulation of superfood extracts. The ingredients include:
- Brazilian Acai Berry: Full of antioxidants, there are many diet products which have acai berry extract exclusively--though definitely classified as a superfood, there are no clinical studies confirming it has weight loss loss effects.
- Cayenne Pepper Fruit: The makers tout the anti-inflammatory, heart healthy, and metabolism-raising benefits of this pepper.
- Garlic: The health benefits of garlic are well known, from lowering cholesterol to enhancing detoxification.
- Soybean Isoflavones: Healthy food to be sure, but we're not sure why they're included, as their low glycemic index shouldn't be of much benefit in a low, powdered form.
- Barley: A rare ingredient in a diet pill, it is high in soluble and insoluble fibers which promote a healthy digestive tract, but a small amount probably doesn't have much effect.
- Wheatgrass: One of the classic superfoods, with a long list of nutrients and benefits.
- Lactobacillus Acidophilus: A healthy probiotic bacteria found in the kefir superfood and marketed heavily in many yogurts on the market.
- Alfalfa Sprouts:Another highly nutritious food, but again, we're not certain of any weight-loss benefit in such small quantities.
- Flaxseed: Flaxseed is an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids.
- Buckwheat: Low glycemic index food which reputedly has some benefits to stabilizing blood sugar levels.
- Green Tea Extract: Often used in the Orient for weight loss teas and such, green tea has many other health benefits.
- Salmon Oil Powder: Salmon oil is packed with omega 3 fatty acids.
- Alpha Lipoic Acid: ALA is a potent antioxidant highly touted by Dr. Perricone.
- DMAE: Dimethylaminoethanol, another antioxidant highly touted by Dr. Perricone reputed to help with anti-aging and weight loss.
Someone interested in trying this product should probably read the book
on which it's based and make a decision. Dr. Perricone's main principle, which he explains in depth, is to reduce inflammation at the cellular level, which, he believes, causes the skin to age and is also linked to degenerative disease. Perricone suggests that protein and some fat is essential for everyone and is especially keen on the benefits of fish. There are many testimonials to Dr. Perricone's ideas, as well as this particular product, both positive and negative.
There may be something to the anti-inflamation ideas, but as a weight loss product, we rank Lipovox moderately well, but not among the top choices given the lack of clinical trial evidence.
Side Effects: There are no documented side effects for Lipovox, but then again the product has never been subjected to clinical trials. However, it has been sold for over five years without claims of major ill effects, and the ingredients listed do not appear to be likely to cause such effects.
Prices: Lipovox has an astoundingly high retail price of $80, but you can get it much cheaper on Amazon for around $30. Lipovox reputedly have only a 2% return rate.
