Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home - 5 Mile Fat Burning Walk is a surprisingly good workout DVD and excellent choice for beginners or intermediate fitness levels. You wouldn't think a DVD of walking in place would be that popular or effective, yet it is on both counts. Leslie Sansone has a dedicated following of those who like her walking videos, and she's constantly in the top ten in terms of fitness DVD sales.
Of course it's not simply ambling along--Leslie teaches you to "walk like a runner", which to be fair does get you sweating. You don't need to have lots of room either, as this is essentially "walking in place," but as with the similar exercises on Wii Fit Plus, that doesn't mean it's an easy workout. The steps are no frills and simple--perfect for beginners, demanding enough for intermediate users, but probably not intense enough for very fit athletes. One key advantage over many workouts is Leslie Sansone's are low impact.
There is a good, high energy music to go with the workout, and as the walking pace increases, the music intensity does as well. It's a neat idea which surprisingly works to keep up your motivation to finish. Customer reaction to the DVD is broadly positive, with many fans calling this the best of all Leslie Sansone's workouts.
One of the few criticisms we have is the small mile odometer in the bottom left corner. It's animated so it attracts your attention, but it doesn't show you where in a given mile you are, so it's not very useful.
Content: You walk at a brisk 12 minute mile pace for each of the five miles on the 5 Mile Fat Burning Walk DVD. These five programs can be mixed and matched to customize the workout to your time and preferences, of course.
The first and fifth mile have Leslie leading, while the other three have several other walkers as well for variety (and they are regular people, not super fit athletes, which is a plus). Each 12-minute mile is broken roughly into 5 minutes of moderate walking, 5 minutes of brisk power walking, and 2 minutes of boosted walking (actually a slow jog) with some kicks. These mini intense bits keep the blood pumping, but are short enough so as not to be overwhelming.
There is also a 6 minute cooldown and extras including one particularly inspiring interview with a walker who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Given the significant price markdown on this recent, highly rated DVD, this is quite a good value package compared to some of the slimmed down fitness DVD offerings available.
Prices: The Leslie Sansone:Walk at Home - 5 Mile Fat Burning Walk retails for $15, but you can get it much cheaper on Amazon for around $9.
